Day 1 Depart the USA bound for Accra Ghana Your Ghanaian journey begins as you board your overnight flight, bound for a land of rich heritage, vibrant culture, and deep ancestral connections. Relax as you dream of the history, traditions, and warm Ghanaian hospitality that awaits you.
Day 2 Arrival in Accra – Welcome to Ghana Arrive in Accra, the vibrant heartbeat of Ghana, where the rhythms of history, culture, and modern energy blend seamlessly. Receive a warm Akwaaba (welcome) as you step onto the land, embraced by the hospitality that Ghana is known for. After a transfer to your hotel, you will check in and relax. In the evening, gather with fellow travelers for a welcome dinner, indulging in authentic Ghanaian cuisine and starting an unforgettable journey through the soul of West Africa. (D)
Day 3 Accra – Culture, History and Spirituality Explore Accra’s rich history with visits to the National Museum of History and Ethnography and a traditional casket-making shop. Walk through Old Accra, where colonial architecture meets vibrant local life, and see landmarks like James Fort, Ussher Fort, and the Old Lighthouse. Pay tribute to Ghana’s first president at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park before browsing the Arts and Crafts Market for unique souvenirs. In the evening, meet local designers for a fashion showcase or attend a church service to experience Ghana’s deep spiritual culture. (B,L)
Day 4 Journey to Kumasi – Village Encounter and Cultural Traditions Travel to the heart of the Ashanti Kingdom, stopping en route at a traditional village for a special welcome from the Chief and elders. Enjoy cultural performances, storytelling, and a rare opportunity to connect with the community. Continue to Kumasi, arriving in time to check in and unwind. (B,L)
Day 5 Kumasi – Exploring the Ashanti Kingdom and Craft Villages Visit the Manhyia Palace and Museum, home to the Ashanti King, and learn about this powerful empire’s legacy. Discover Kumasi’s artistic heart at the National Cultural Centre, Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, and Okomfo Anokye Sword. Experience the energy of Kumasi Central Market, one of the largest in West Africa. In the afternoon, visit Ahwiaa Woodcarvers’ Village, and the Ntonso Adinkra Village, where you can create your own Adinkra design, and Adanwomase, renowned for its traditional Kente weaving. (B,L)
Day 6 Assin Manso – The Last Bath and Reflection (All White Attire Recommended) Journey to the Assin Manso Slave River Site, where enslaved Africans took their last bath before their forced journey. Participate in a reverential feet-washing ceremony and honor the ancestors. Continue to Elmina, where the ocean welcomes you to your beachside retreat. (B,L)
Day 7 Cape Coast and Elmina Castles – A Journey Through the Slave Dungeons (All White Attire Recommended) Visit Cape Coast Castle, a former slave fortress where captives were held before being forced onto ships. Walk through the Door of No Return and participate in a flute dirge ceremony in memory of the ancestors. Continue to Elmina Castle, the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa, and witness the slave dungeons and condemned cells where those who resisted were held. Reflect on the past before returning to your hotel. (B,L)
Day 8 Rebirth and Community Engagement – Naming Ceremony and School Visit Experience a traditional Ghanaian Naming Ceremony, where you’ll be welcomed into the community and given an Africanname. Enjoy drumming, dancing, and storytelling in a vibrant celebration. Visit the Elmina fishing harbor, boat- building yard, and fish-smoking center, where local traditions continue. Later, I engage with schoolchildren at a nearby community school before heading back to Accra. (B,L)
Day 9 A Day of Leisure and Farewell Celebration Savor your final day in Accra at your own pace, relax at your hotel, explore local art galleries, or take one last stroll through the bustling markets to pick up souvenirs that capture the spirit of Ghana. Absorb this vibrant city’s sights, sounds, and rhythms before the journey home. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner. (B,D)
